| Co-author
of two crossover books: New Ways of Knowing with
Marcus G Raskin (and contributions from Susan Buck-Morss,
Noam Chomsky, et al) setting out the end of simple value-free
amoral defense of sciences and Muddling Through with
former student Mike Fortun, recounting how one pursues science
and truths in the twenty-first century – taking lessons
from and setting theory for the practical work of ISIS.
Mike is now Founding Fellow and trustee of the ISIS Institute.
Quantum interferometry:
Proposal of 360° rotation experiment helped launch the
field of Neutron interference physics. Interferometry makes
very massive, neutral elementary particles act like waves
to investigate fundamental physics and to measure very small
quantities, refined effects and paradoxical behavior.
Basic quantum mechanics:
Proving that you can construct lab devices to implement every
well-defined quantum measurement -- a problem unsolved since
the first quantum textbooks posed it in the 1930's. The solution
is useful for the implementation of quantum computations.
(done with Hampshire College student Phil Bertani and Australian
collaborators.)
Quantum computation and information: Co-author
of the first paper on concentrating entanglement, contributing
the method first used to demonstrate this important effect.
It is based on ideas in my first-year undergraduate course,
Quantum Mechanics for the Myriad.
Founder and developer of ISIS:
Institute for Science and Interdisciplinary Studies has introduced
unique ways for scientists, communities in need, and studiers
of the sciences to work together to make sciences and scientists
better serve the common good. Major projects have included
sustainable agriculture, research on genomics, cleaning up
military toxic wastes, and protecting biodiversity and cultural
enclaves in the Ecuadorian Amazon at the invitation of indigenes.
Over 50 scientific articles, scores of science
talks & conference papers, dozens of presentations on
topics ranging from "Muddling Through: Modern Healthcare
Systems for China & the US" to "Metaphors in
Quantum Teleportation Physics" to "Military Nuclear
& Toxic Waste Clean-up, the Community-Science Connection."
